According to the announcement of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea today, the CEOs of the three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a next-generation battery fund and jointly develop core technologies.
LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation plan to set up a 100 billion won fund in the first quarter of next year. The fund will be used to acquire next-generation battery technology and cultivate small and medium-sized enterprises to build ecosystems in this field.
The three companies will also cooperate on materials, processes and equipment related to next-generation batteries. According to the agreement, they will jointly invest in R&D projects, namely solid state batteries, lithium metal batteries and lithium sulfur batteries, support the development of next-generation battery materials, processes and equipment, and accelerate the early commercialization of core technologies.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)
"Battery is a representative emerging industry, and its market size is expected to surpass that of storage semiconductor. It is a game changer in the new energy industry, including electric vehicles and energy storage systems," said Sung Yoon mo, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea, when attending the signing ceremony of the three companies.
He said, "This cooperation is of great significance, because these three battery manufacturers will jointly develop technologies, respond to patent attacks from foreign companies, and jointly build the next generation industrial ecosystem."
